CATAPULTING WILDLIFE IS A CRIME |
Community Safety Update: Concerns Over Catapult Use in Rural West The Rural West Safer Neighbourhood Police Team has recently received troubling reports of animals and wildlife being targeted, injured, or harmed by objects fired from catapults. While simply carrying a catapult is not illegal, the use of one can easily cross into criminal behaviour. As highlighted in the police notice, using a catapult irresponsibly may lead to offences under several laws, including: • The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 – intentionally killing or injuring any wild bird. • The Animal Welfare Act 2006 – causing an animal to suffer. • The Wild Mammals (Protection) Act 1996 – causing unnecessary suffering to any wild mammal. • The Prevention of Crime Act 1953 – carrying an offensive weapon in a public place. • The Criminal Damage Act 1971 – intentionally or recklessly damaging property. The police are asking residents to help reduce harm and prevent further incidents by taking the following steps: 1. Dissuade children from taking catapults out of the home. 2. Explain clearly that using a catapult to cause harm or damage is a criminal offence. 3. If you wish to dispose of a catapult, contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team, who can assist with safe disposal.
The community’s cooperation is vital in protecting local wildlife and maintaining a safe environment for everyone.
Thank you for your continued support.
